The Devon Freewheelers, founded in 2009, serves the whole of the South West, providing a free transport and courier service, supporting surgeries, the NHS, air ambulances, and the community, at no cost.
Our mission is to support the National Health Service in any way we can, for free. Our volunteers transport blood and medical samples to pathology laboratories, breast milk to neonatal units, medical notes, equipment, drugs, and anything else needed by healthcare professionals - or patients - that we can fit onto a motorcycle or in a 4x4 car.
Our vision: to provide a free courier service to the NHS and medical surgeries, so the money can be saved by those institutions and used elsewhere, to the benefit of the patient. Our principals: we are caring, patient-led and developed through experience. We are transparent, fair and inclusive, professional, effective and have a robust governance. We are community-led and offer collaboration regionally and nationally. The service is run by volunteer Blood Bike riders and drivers, who operate out-of-hours, 5pm until 7am, Monday to Friday, and a 24-hour service during weekends and bank holidays. No reasonable request for help is ever turned down. This includes daytime collections. We have a fleet of vehicles, motorbikes and 4x4 cars, which enable the volunteers to provide the free courier service in all-weathers.
Our service operates out of bases from across the whole county, with riders based in Plymouth, Torbay, North Devon, East Devon, Exeter and Dorset. Our motorbike riders all hold advanced riding qualifications and are certified by IAM or ROSPA.
Devon Freewheelers was founded in 2009 as an association body, then registered as a charity – registered number 1138889. After nine years this structure was reviewed and a decision was recorded by the members at a Special General Meeting to continue this organisation as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO), known as Devon Freewheelers, and through associated names: Devon Blood Bikes and Blood Bikes Devon. Registered incorporation: 1180264.
Devon Freewheelers receives no government funding and relies entirely on donations and fundraising to operate its free service. Every penny donated to the charity is used to keep the free courier service on the road. We are only able to do this because of our supporters, regular donors and those who remember us in their will, or through a legacy. Every contribution made to the Devon Freewheelers is ploughed back into running the service, through the blood bikes operations, charitable activities, administration and governance.
