Praise has been heaped on the Devon Freewheelers’ ‘fantastic’ community spirit by a hairdresser from Honiton who set up a historic run-to-remember.

Jenny Lane, owner of Alan Rowe Barbering, in Old School House Court, helped organise a family-friendly fun run as part of the town’s June celebrations to mark the Queen’s 70 years on the throne.

Keen runner Jenny recently presented the Devon Blood Bikes with a £200 thank-you donation, after the charity stepped in to help protect the public, supervising the event’s road closures.

She praised the Devon Freewheelers charity for its community spirit, applauding the selfless volunteers for stepping in whenever help is needed.

Jenny, who was part of Honiton’s Jubilee committee, said: “What a fantastic charity they are. The town is lucky to have them here.

“We wanted to give something back to say thank you for making the event possible.

“This shows the importance of all joining together and helping each other out. That’s what’s it’s about, that’s how we can make things happen for the town. It’s important to help and give back – which the Devon Freewheelers have always done.”

The charity said the donation would be used to keep the no-cost courier and transport service on the road, supporting communities across Devon, and the NHS.

Russell Roe, Devon Freewheelers CEO, based at the charity’s headquarters in Honiton, said: “The Devon Freewheelers charity is a community-minded organisation and our volunteers will help wherever they can.

“We were pleased to be able to play a small part and lend our services to Honiton for the town’s Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations.

“The charity is so grateful for this donation to help keep the blood bikes on the road.

“It will be ploughed back into helping the community across Devon, fueling the free courier and transport service, supporting the NHS at no cost.”

The Queen’s Jubilee run, part of Honiton’s four-day celebrations, invited all ages and abilities to take part for a medal in the junior one-mile, Jubilee five-kilometre, or Platinum seven-miler events.
